The inlet septum is one of the key components of the sample introduction column hplc vials. All columns must have a high enough carrier gas head pressure to ensure gas flow through the column. The purpose of the septum is to keep the chromatographic system in a sealed state and prevent air from entering the system. For inlet types and analytical needs, there are different sizes and septa made of different types of materials.

The spacer used is usually based on the recommended upper temperature. The low temperature septum is soft and has good sealing performance. Puncture resistance is better than high temperature septum. However, if the use temperature of the septum is higher than the recommended temperature, leakage or decomposition may occur, which may result in loss of the sample, a decrease in the column carrier gas flow rate, a short column life, and a ghost peak.
The septum separates the sample flow path from the outside and blocks it. When the needle is inserted, it can maintain the internal pressure of the system to prevent leakage, avoiding the infiltration of outside air and polluting the system hplc vials. It is generally made of silicone rubber with high temperature resistance and good air tightness.
