Gas chromatography columns are rapidly evolving due to their unique advantages such as high separation capacity, high sensitivity, and high analysis speed. With the increasing maturity and continuous improvement of elastic quartz cross-linked capillary column technology, it has become the main means of separating complex multi-component mixtures and multi-project analysis, and has a tendency to replace packed columns in various fields. Nowadays, the new gas chromatograph and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer are basically separated and analyzed by capillary column.

The Gas chromatography columns has a certain lifetime and is directly related to the condition and maintenance of the sample being analyzed. The main sign of the end of the column life is that the fixed liquid loses too much and loses the separation ability. The blockage or breakage of the column tube is also the cause of the column failure. Sometimes the column loses its ability to separate because of the adsorption of some high-boiling polar compounds, which can be cleaned and repaired.

1. Aging the column at high temperature and flushing out the pollutants with carrier gas; if Gas chromatography columns performance still cannot be recovered, remove the column from the instrument and cut the column head 10 cm or longer (the stigma is easy to be contaminated). Then install the test. This is a common column performance recovery measure.

2. If it does not work, it can be washed again by repeated injection of solvent. The commonly used solvents are acetone, toluene, ethanol, chloroform and dichloromethane. This method can often work with 5-10μl of injection each time.

3. If the performance of the column is not good, only remove the Gas chromatography columns and rinse with dichloromethane or chloroform. The solvent may be drawn from the other end by vacuuming, or the solvent may be pressurized by pressurizing the solvent bottle. The amount of solvent depends on the degree of contamination of the column, generally about 20 ml. If this method still does not work, the column should be scrapped. It should be noted that only the column with fixed liquid cross-linking can be cleaned by this method, otherwise the fixative will be completely washed away.

This is the end of the introduction of Maintenance Considerations for GC Columns. I hope it can help you.
